15 Months!

Ryder is now officially 1 and 1/4 years old!  Just as expected, the second year is going by as fast as the first.

15 Months

Lets see what this 15 month old is up to these days:

  • He is crawling on hands & knees 100% of the time now!!  He also pulls up to stand consistently throughout the day and has even let go a few times recently!
  • His vocabulary continues to grow.  Some new words he has been saying are: play, all gone, done, draw, Bubba, Sissy, treat, cookie, turn, drive, keys, and water.
  • He is still in 12 months clothes and size 4 diapers.  He has only wore shoes 2 times in his whole life, so I have no clue what his shoe size is!
  • Some of his favorite things to do right now are go swimming, go for bike rides, give Bubba treats, and go night-night (for pretend, of course!)
  • He is in therapy 3 times a week and is doing great, although his left hand still needs a lot of work.
  • He loves to play!  His favorite toys are his ball activity center, his blocks, and his cars.

Each month brings something new & exciting.  We’re having a blast raising this boy and look forward to the months and years ahead!

We’re Famous!

image

Well no, not really!  But it felt really neat to see this email go out today from the National Kidney Foundation announcing us as the Honorary Family!

We are so honored to do this, as you all know, the NKF is very special to us!

I set up our team page, so if you want to get a head start on joining the team, feel free!  And/Or if you want to make a donation…hey…go right ahead!  We are still 5 months away from the walk, so fair warning, I’m just getting started on the Team Ryder posts ;-)

Follow this link to get to the Team Ryder page, the “Honorary Family” link is on the left: http://walk.kidney.org/goto/teamryder

The Newest Family Member

Alan’s Uncle Danny & his girlfriend Bianca had their baby Wednesday, so we were so excited to go to the hospital last night and meet our new cousin!  Ryder was more excited about having all the family crammed into one hospital room than he was about the baby…but me, on the other hand, I was excited about the baby!  He’s so sweet and quiet and content!  I can’t wait to love on him every Sunday at Grandma’s…that is until him & Ryder are big enough to start wrestling around and chasing eachother and getting in trouble.  The sad part is, that reality isn’t going to be long from now :(

Welcome to the world baby Samuel!

We all went down the cafeteria to have some dinner while we were there, and I was letting Ryder crawl all over the nasty floor, thinking nothing of it.  I was laughing at him because he kept laying on the floor saying “night-night”.  Now that I’m looking through these pictures I’m asking myself “what happened to the germophobe hypochondriac Mom you were when Ryder was a newborn?!”  Okay well maybe I still have some of that in me…but for some reason my guard was down and this nasty floor, in a HOSPITAL, did not gross me out lastnight…strange!

Achieving Goals

I’ve been watching Ryder develop and grow and learn right before my eyes and am SO VERY proud of him.  But it seems like every time it comes down to testing or evaluations we end up feeling so discouraged.  But…not this time, we finally got a good report!

I cannot believe this, but it has already been 6 months since he started therapy through Early Intervention.  Miss Sharon has come to our home once a week for 6 months now, so it was time to revisit his goals and re-evaluate his skills.  I was so excited to hear her feedback because she has been there through all of this journey, working with him and helping us along.

The first time we did this, Ryder was 9 months old (they tested him at his adjusted age of 8 months) and was testing at a 33% delay in both gross motor & fine motor skills which is what qualified him for therapy to begin with…this was before we knew anything about the stroke.  He was also atleast a month behind in every other area that was tested.  Today was a completely different story!

His cognitive, problem solving, and language skills are consistently testing at 16 months but had some skills in the 18-19 month range!  His fine motor and gross motor are now testing at 13 months (makes me feel much better than the 10 months we heard the other day!).  Because he was a preemie they test him at his adjusted age of 13 months, so they are technically showing no delays in any area.  I was honestly not prepared to hear those words at all, I had tears in my eyes!

We did have to discuss that most of the reason he’s not showing a delay is because he has figured out ways to get away with only using one arm, and is so determined that it’s not holding him back one bit.  He’s not off the hook with getting therapy because he needs to be doing all of these things with TWO hands, not just one.  So they said he has the knowledge and ability to do these skills, now we just need to work on quality…meaning being able to do them the right way, not the way he has figured out is easiest.

He achieved so many of the goals that we had set for him 6 months ago, so we were able to cross many off the list, like passing objects between hands, bearing weight on straight arms, and pulling to stand.  There were some goals that needed to be left on the list, like assisting in dressing (specifically the left arm and leg), and initiating play with the left hand.  Some new goals we are adding for the next 6 months are holding round objects with two hands (like a cup that does not have handles), climbing, and self-help skills (like washing both hands).

Seeing on paper how far he has come in just 6 months makes me SO excited to see what we can accomplish over the next 6 months and beyond.

Sorry I’m slacking on the picture posts lately, too many words, I know, I just have so much to get out.  I’ll leave you with one picture, I don’t want to be too cruel!

He Gets It!

How amazing is it to watch a little brain figure things out?  I love to just sit back and watch Ryder as he takes this world in and is now starting to comprehend how things work.  Some examples:

When I pick him up from daycare, he tells everyone “BYYYYEEEE” then looks at me and says “Car” then when we get to the car he says “Teys” (keys) then he says “Drive”, I say “yes baby, Mommy is going to put her keys in the car and drive you home”.  He always thinks about that statement for a minute and then says “Plaaaaayyy??” Yes, when we get home we can play!  It amazes me that he knows this sequence and can put it all together in his mind.

He knows exactly where the dog treats are and always points at the cabinet and says “treat, treat, treat” over and over until you hand him a treat and then he yells SO loud “BUBBA!” as he crawls off to go bring Bubba a treat.  He will even sit outside of Bubba’s cage and break the treat up into little pieces so that he has more to feed him!

Whenever we are drinking a bottle of water, or anything with a lid, he insists on putting the lid on but he knows just setting it on top isn’t right, so he looks at you and says “Turn”.  Gotta turn the lid so it will stay on…smart boy!

We all know that he has a Praise Baby obsession, and he now wants it to be on at all times.  He will go find the remote saying “mote, mote, mote” then start pointing it at the TV saying “mooo, mooo” (movie), if I say “no Ryder, we only watch your movie at night time” he tells me “PLAY!”  He knows that you have to press play to get the movie to come on.

Alan is a little scraped up from, lets just call it a run of bad luck he had last week, and Ryder always wants to touch his scabs.  We tell him over and over, Daddy is hurt, don’t touch.  So now he points at the scabs and says “boo-boo” then presses them with his fingers before we can stop him and says “Hurt!”

In the mornings I always have a cup of coffee in my hand.  Ryder has never tasted coffee, but somehow he knows all about it.  He says “coffee” Yup, Mommy’s drinking coffee.  “Mmmmmm” Yup, Mommy’s coffee is yummy!  “Hot!” That’s right baby, Mommy’s coffee is very hot!

He gets it!  I don’t know when this happened, but it’s like he comprehends everything now!

Cousins

This weekend, all the girls (plus Ryder) piled in the car for a road trip to my cousin Jessica’s Bridal Shower.  We had about a 2 hour drive, and Ryder did not sleep a wink the whole way there.  I was a little nervous about this, but as always, he amazed me and was in a great mood for the whole shower.  Having Yaya around always helps brighten his day anyway!

I’m so glad we got to be there to celebrate with my cousin.  She looked so beautiful and happy, I can’t wait for the wedding!  It’s pretty crazy for us to get together now for our big life events, when it seems like just yesterday we were 12 years old having sleepovers.  I loved growing up with my cousins, we would get so excited to see each other, and there was never a dull moment when we got together.  I don’t think we’ll ever lose the bond we formed as children because still to this day when we see each other it is as if we never missed a beat.

Cousins

Speaking of cousins bonding…these little cousins were cracking me up in the car making each other laugh!  I love how much they love each other!
